Charles Doyle, Conan Doyle, Conan's son Michael Doyle, and Rhonda Spurlock (a Spyres derivative) made this trek in September of 2003. The next day these folks returned with another man and woman and tools to raise and straighten grave markers. Charley's account of these trips closely parallels the story by Robert G. Winn.
OLD BETHLEHEM (by Robert Winn) : "We were nearing the bottom of the hill when Garland Johnson, my guide, informed me that we were near the place where Rich Hollow converges with the valley of Lee Creek. He pointed across the canyon to a mountaintop point of land jutting westward. This, he said, was the ridge along which the road formerly ran from Blackburn beside Highway 74 out of Winslow, to Old Bethlehem. He also pointed to the hill directly opposite and said that Old Bethlehem had stood on a bench of land there, but because of the steep grade and overgrown condition of the hillside we would take a more circuitous route to the bottom. . . . We crossed the dry bed of Rich Creek and up a fairly steep cut-off trail instead of following the old road."
