In my front yard I had three completely different types of gardens. Two of these were microclimates created by the sprinkler system and the layour of my house. The third type of garden was planned. First the big picture of the front of my home.

        The Big Picture

The front yard had a shallow slope to it. Enough that we decided to put in three terraces. The first terrace was three to five feet from the house. It contained a variety of plants, mostly plants that required a lot of care. The trees in this area were ornamental pear, weeping cherry tree and a small magnolia. The next area was a grass area with fescue. It stayed green all year. The third part of the yard was a desert area. It contained only drought tolerant plants.

        Desert Area

This area received light watering every two - four weeks depending on the temperature. The higher the temperature, the more water used. Flowers that grow in this area are blue and white flax, tithonia (Mexican Sunflower), and port-u-laca. Euphorbia myrsinites was the crowning glory. You can see this plant located next to the hedgehog cactus. The shrubs are apache plume and are magnificent when in bloom.
