SPOONTS FAMILY TREE:

Joseph Spoonts, the original immigrant to America was from a small German country called "Emperor of Germany" and came to America between 1775 and 1790. In Germany he was a lawyer according to his grandson, Morris A. Spoonts and came to America because of some political trouble. Joseph Levi Spoonts (notice he added the 's' to Spoont) who was Morris' father was born a few weeks after his father, Joseph Spoont died in 1803 and only knew about him thru his mother, Mary Smith Spoonts (who was illiterate and may have been the source of the added 's') and others who had known his father.

Joseph Levi left home at the age of 11 and indentured himself as an apprentice in a government workshop at Harper's Ferry and worked there for seven years where he became a skilled workman and architect. He later moved to New York where he was in the merchantile business and met and married Mary Eliza Vanderbilt in 1830. Morris was in his 30's when his mother died so he must have known much about her. He writes that she was a cousin to the rich and famous Commodore Vanderbilt and that she was of "Knickerbocker stock". Her family was from Holland and had settled in Staton Island and New York.

Joseph Levi and Mary Eliza moved several times as he was engaged in Railroad work and lived in Maryland, Lousianna, Tennasee and Georgia. About 1852 they moved to Texas and settled on Cow House Creek in Bell County where he built a mill and gin. Morris was born there in 1857.

Morris was in his teens when his father died but he later wrote down some history which my sister, Mary Louise Spoonts Branch (picture above) took and started researching the Family Tree. Before her death in 1966 she spent years and travelled miles to get documents, pictures and information from members of the family. I am greatful to her for gathering information on over 1,000 family members.

I have tried to update and correct the tree as time permitted. If you are a relative of the Spoontses or would like more information on the history of the family, you can look at the updated Spoonts-O'Hearn-Sutton, Wharton, Foster or Vanderbilt Family Trees on the Spoonts Family Web Site. E-mail me for information on getting access to the Spoonts Family Web Site.

If you are a relative and have corrections or updates on your branch of the family I would appreciate you e-mailing that information to me so I can update the Tree at the "e-mail me" click on above on this page.
