There is a dark side to El Niño. Plentiful rains mean greatly increased plant growth, and a corresponding
increase in flammable
undergrowth. The possibility of wildfire is therefore boosted. The above image is borne of fire, with smoke on
the western hor-
izon causing the low light to tint the space around the setting sun with rich colors. The setting is Chihuahuan
Desert, on the left,
in silhouette, are the dagger-like leaves of a Mountain Torrey Yucca, and scattered here and there are branches
of the Ocotillo.
