Other information gathered from research by myself and my sister Louise found that
Joseph Levi Spoonts (1803-1872) had built sugar mills in Cuba, and the original Senate
Chambers in Washington, D.C. He had a flour mill which he moved from Georgia to Texas
in 1852 and located on the Leon River (Cow Creek branch) which sometime after changed its course and left
the mill high and dry. He died in 1872 and left his widow (Mary Eliza Vanderbilt Spoonts)
to raise nine of their remaining children (they had 13) in "gentiel poverty".
I have several original letters written by Mary Eliza to one of her daughters
in the late 1800's in which she laments the "hard times" and tells about her oldest son's
(William picture above) attempts to sell the old mill. In my youth I visited the old home place in Moffat,
Texas where my Aunt Abbie (Abbigail Emma Spoonts Wharton) who was a daughter of Henry
Andrew Spoonts who was the third son of Joseph Levi. She lived and cared for her brothers
and sisters who stayed on the home place until they were grown. Part of the acreage they
owned there is now under Lake Belton. My Father, Tom was one of the "7 Brothers" she
cared for and is pictured on the HOME PAGE (1) of this site. Incidently, the WHARTON
FAMILY TREE is also on the Spoonts Family Tree Web Site. There are three known marriages
between Spoonts and Whartons.
If you want more information on any of these families, SPOONTS, O'HEARN,
SUTTON, OR WHARTON click on the "e-mail me" spot above on this page and request access
to the Spoonts Family Tree Web Site. This is a private site for family and relatives
and requires approval to access, however I will be glad to give guest access to anyone who
wants to visit the site.
